SwitchBot's Fan 2 Pro Drops the Matter Hub—But Not the Setup Test
SwitchBot's Battery Circulator Fan 2 Pro fixes the most awkward part of its earlier smart-fan story: the new model is a native Matter-over-Wi-Fi device, so it can join a compatible smart-home platform without a SwitchBot hub.
That is a real improvement. It is not a promise that Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, Homey, or another Matter controller will reproduce every control in the SwitchBot app.
Buy the fan for its airflow, portability, physical controls, and cleaning design. Treat native Matter as a simpler integration path that still needs a one-room test.
The Hub Is Genuinely Gone
The Connectivity Standards Alliance lists the Fan 2 Pro as a Matter 1.5 end product, certified June 3, 2026. Its record identifies Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as the transport interfaces. SwitchBot's product page is more direct: Matter over Wi-Fi lets the fan join a compatible smart-home environment without a SwitchBot hub.
That distinction matters. A native endpoint removes a brand-specific bridge from the basic control chain. It reduces the hardware to place, power, update, and troubleshoot, and it avoids buying a hub solely to expose one fan.
Independent launch coverage from The Verge and T3 reported a $119.99 U.S. launch price. At that price, removing a separate bridge makes the smart portion easier to justify—but only if the fan itself fits the room.
Matter Does Not Guarantee the Whole App
SwitchBot says its own app can adjust speed from 1% to 100% and select Turbo, airflow, natural, and sleep modes. That is the vendor control surface, not a cross-platform feature guarantee.
Matter certification establishes a conforming device and connection model. It does not require every destination platform to expose each vendor mode with the same name, automation options, or interface.
Before deciding that native Matter solves the purchase, pair one unit to the platform you actually use and test six things:
- power on and off; - speed changes; - mode selection; - horizontal and vertical oscillation; - schedules or sensor-driven routines; - recovery after Wi-Fi, controller, and power interruptions.
If a favorite control stays inside the SwitchBot app, decide whether that split is acceptable. The fan also has onboard and remote controls, so a platform outage does not have to become a comfort outage.
The 70-Hour Number Has a Small Asterisk and a Big Meaning
The Fan 2 Pro has a 3,600mAh battery and can run from AC, USB-C, or its battery. SwitchBot advertises up to about 70 hours cordless, but its official test used speed 1 with oscillation, ion generation, and the light switched off.
That is a maximum-runtime profile, not typical use at higher airflow with moving louvers and extra features active. A useful trial should measure the settings you will actually automate. Run the intended speed and oscillation pattern for an evening, record the battery drop, and calculate whether the charging interval still feels convenient.
Also test Wi-Fi where the fan will move. A cordless device may travel from a bedroom to a kitchen, patio door, or laundry area, but native Matter-over-Wi-Fi still depends on usable 2.4GHz coverage at each automation location.
Maintenance Is Part of the Buying Decision
SwitchBot says the front guard, rear guard, blade, and filter can be removed and washed. The motor-containing main body cannot. That separation is valuable for a device that moves dust, hair, and cooking residue, but only if disassembly is simple enough that it will actually be cleaned.
Check the physical routine before the return window closes: remove and reinstall the washable parts, confirm the remote is easy to find, and verify that manual control remains obvious to guests.
The Fan 2 Pro's best upgrade is not a new automation trick. It is removing the SwitchBot hub from a device that should remain useful when the smart layer is unavailable. If the airflow, noise, battery behavior, cleaning process, and six Matter controls all pass in one room, then native Matter earns its place in the rest of the home.
