Homey's Matter 1.5 Certification Needs Four Checks Before You Buy a Hub
Homey's new Matter 1.5 certification is real and specific. The Connectivity Standards Alliance lists Homey as a certified software component running firmware 13.3.0, with certificate ID CSA26025SWC60263-M1 and a June 29 certification date.
That still does not make “Matter 1.5” a complete buying answer.
Before choosing Homey for a new device—or using it to carry older gear into another ecosystem—check four things: the certified host, the Thread path, the device category and capabilities, and the controls that survive bridging.
1. Match the Certification to the Host
Homey's announcement scopes the certification to Homey Pro models from 2023 through 2026, Homey Pro mini, and Homey Self-Hosted Server.
That list matters. A store page saying “works with Homey” is not the same as the Alliance certifying the device itself, and the Homey Bridge is not named as one of the certified Matter controllers in the announcement. Confirm which product will act as the controller and whether its current software is on the supported lineage.
The certificate validates Homey's Matter software against the 1.5 specification. It does not certify every light, lock, sensor, appliance, or camera connected to Homey.
2. Decide Who Owns the Thread Path
Homey Pro and Homey Pro mini include a Thread Border Router. For a Matter-over-Thread sensor, lock, or plug, that removes one infrastructure purchase.
Homey Self-Hosted Server is different. Homey says it needs a compatible Thread Border Router already on the local network, and Matter-over-Thread devices are added through the Homey Mobile App.
That turns the host decision into a network decision. Before buying, identify the controller, border router, phone used for commissioning, and Thread network the device will join. If the home already has border routers from Apple, Google, Amazon, or another platform, do not assume they form one interchangeable mesh without checking the actual onboarding path.
3. Check the Category and the Exact Capability
Matter 1.5 expands the standard with cameras, a redesigned model for closures, soil sensors, and more energy-management data. Those are specification capabilities, not a guarantee that every controller exposes them immediately.
Homey's current documentation says its Matter 1.5 support includes EV chargers, heat pumps, solar panels, major appliances, robot vacuums, speakers, sensors, and window coverings, with more categories planned. That wording is the buying clue: use Homey's current support map for the exact category, then verify the exact capability you need.
A device may pair while an advanced function remains in the manufacturer's app. Dynamic lighting scenes, camera intelligence, appliance diagnostics, energy details, and specialized security modes are common examples of features that can extend beyond Matter's standardized controls.
“It pairs” and “it replaces the native app” are different claims.
4. Test What Survives Matter Bridge
Homey's Matter Bridge can expose supported devices already connected through Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, infrared, 433MHz radio, Wi-Fi, or cloud integrations to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, and Home Assistant. That can extend the useful life of devices that will never receive native Matter firmware.
But Homey still controls the original device. The receiving ecosystem gets only the controls represented through the bridge and understood on its side. Independent HomeKit News reporting notes that supported features vary by destination platform.
Test one representative device before migrating a room. Confirm on/off or position control, state updates after physical use, names, automations, restart behavior, and recovery after a network interruption. If a lock, closure, camera, HVAC device, or major load is involved, verify alerts and physical safeguards separately.
The Buying Decision
Homey's Matter 1.5 certification strengthens the case for Homey as a multi-protocol hub. It gives buyers a verifiable controller baseline and lets Pro and Pro mini handle Matter over Thread without another border router.
Buy only after four answers are clear:
- Which certified Homey host will run the installation? - Where will Matter-over-Thread devices get border-router service? - Does Homey support the required category and capability now? - Which controls, alerts, and states appear in the destination ecosystem?
Also review household access on both sides of a bridge. Share only necessary devices, remove stale pairings, and keep the native app available for proprietary settings, firmware updates, diagnostics, and recovery.
A version badge can narrow the shortlist. These four checks decide whether the system will actually work.
