Aqara's new H2 smart plugs expose a choice that buyers should understand before pairing anything: the same hardware can run as a Matter-over-Thread device or as an Aqara Zigbee device, but each path has different requirements and features.
HomeKit News reports that the Power Plug H2 is coming in UK and EU versions with both Thread and Zigbee radios. That flexibility is useful, but it does not make setup automatic. Buyers still need to choose which network will own the plug.
The practical thesis is simple: do not buy the H2 because it has two protocol names on the box. Buy it only after deciding whether you value direct Matter integration or Aqara's deeper Zigbee features more.
1. Start with the electrical fit
The two versions are not interchangeable. HomeKit News says the UK Type-G model supports loads up to 13A or 3,250W, while the EU model supports Type C, E, and F plugs and loads up to 16A or 3,680W. Both include energy monitoring.
That makes regional fit and load rating the first checks. Before thinking about apps or automations, confirm that the plug format matches the outlet and that the appliance stays within the published limit.
The H2 also comes in UK variants with either a standard status LED or a full-color RGB LED. The RGB version can show energy use and participate in automations, but some of its more advanced energy-visualization features depend on Zigbee mode and an Aqara hub. That detail matters because the most visible feature on the product may not be available in the network mode you planned to use.
2. Choose Matter over Thread for a direct platform path
In Matter-over-Thread mode, HomeKit News says the plug can pair directly with a compatible Matter ecosystem without an Aqara hub. The requirements are a Matter controller and a Thread border router in the chosen ecosystem.
The report lists Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and Home Assistant among the supported platforms. That makes the Thread path attractive when the goal is direct control from an existing Matter setup and the home already has the required controller and border-router infrastructure.
The buyer check is not merely "Do I use Apple Home or Alexa?" It is "Do I already have the right Matter controller and Thread border router active in that platform?" If the answer is unclear, verify the controller and border-router roles before ordering. A Matter badge does not create the missing network infrastructure.
3. Choose Zigbee for Aqara-specific controls
In Zigbee mode, the plug connects to an Aqara hub. HomeKit News says this path unlocks Aqara-specific features while still allowing the plug to reach Matter platforms through Matter Bridging when the hub supports that route.
The source ties several controls to the Aqara path, including advanced RGB energy visualization, configurable maximum-load limits, and accidental-removal protection. Those are meaningful differences, not cosmetic app extras.
Zigbee mode therefore makes more sense when an Aqara hub is already part of the home, when those controls matter, or when the buyer wants the plug managed inside Aqara Home first and shared outward second.
The tradeoff is architectural: Matter over Thread offers a more direct path to a chosen platform, while Zigbee puts the Aqara hub in the middle in exchange for Aqara's fuller feature set.
4. Treat protocol switching as a migration tool
The H2 can act as a router on the selected network, according to HomeKit News: a Thread router in Thread mode or a Zigbee router in Zigbee mode. Placement can therefore affect more than the appliance connected to the plug.
That is useful, but it also means a later protocol change should be planned. Moving the plug from one mode to the other changes which mesh it supports and which controller or hub manages it. Before switching, record the automations, scenes, energy rules, and household access that depend on the current setup.
This is where the H2's two-radio design earns its value. It gives a household a migration option without requiring a different plug, but it does not remove the work of reconfiguring the home around the new path.
5. Do not write Zigbee out of the plan
The Connectivity Standards Alliance's Exegin Technologies Limited on Zigbee 4.0 notes that Zigbee has more than twenty years of history and continues to evolve for interoperable connected-home and connected-building ecosystems.
That does not prove that every old Zigbee device will gain new features or work with every hub. It does show why products such as the H2 still make room for Zigbee while adding Matter over Thread: an established protocol and a newer interoperability layer can coexist in the same buying decision.
For current Aqara owners, Zigbee is not automatically the outdated choice. For a household starting with an established Matter-over-Thread platform, the direct Matter path may be cleaner. The correct answer depends on the infrastructure already in the home and the features the household will actually use.
A five-minute pre-purchase checklist
1. Confirm the regional plug and load limit. Choose the UK or EU model that matches the outlet and appliance. 2. Inventory the controllers you already own. Identify the Matter controller, Thread border router, or Aqara hub that would manage the plug. 3. Choose the network mode before installation. Decide between direct Matter-over-Thread integration and Aqara's Zigbee feature set. 4. Check feature dependencies. If RGB energy feedback, maximum-load configuration, or Aqara-specific protections matter, confirm that the required Zigbee mode and hub fit the plan. 5. Document automations before switching modes. Treat any later migration as a controller and mesh change, not as a harmless settings toggle.

The H2's best feature is not that it says Matter, Thread, and Zigbee. It is that it lets a buyer choose between two credible integration paths.
Use Matter over Thread when the home already has the right controller and border router and direct platform integration is the priority. Use Zigbee when an Aqara hub is already central to the setup or when Aqara-specific energy and protection controls matter more.
The smartest purchase is the one that matches the network you can support today while preserving a practical migration path for tomorrow.
